The Music Program at Kenneth D. Taylor School

Mrs. M. Buonomo, Music Specialist Teacher

Ms. C. Jackson, Music Specialist Teacher

At Kenneth Taylor School, the music room is a place where every student can be successful because of the many avenues used to explore and discover musical concepts. As students experience singing, playing instruments, movement and dance, improvising, notating, listening and creating, they are developing the skills and knowledge necessary for strong musical literacy.
Quality classrooms evolve around powerful knowledge that works for every student and this is the key to the success of the Orff Schulwerk  process – that it is elemental, distilling musical concepts down to their roots enabling all children to become musically independent thinkers and problem solvers.  Carl Orff describes “…elemental music as never music alone but forming a unity with movement, dance, speech and song”. As students develop their vocabularies in each of these medias of music, they become increasingly proficient at performing, creating and listening-all of the key behaviours of musicians that make up fluency in the language of music.

At this time, we are waiting to hear from the system level what the next steps will be in regards to future programming for our students. Information will be communicated as soon as we know more from the Calgary Board of Education. This is a new situation for everyone and we want to assure you that the school will be communicating this information to our families as soon as we have a plan and procedures in place. Thank you for your patience and understanding. In the meantime, the CBE has put together some resources until a long range plan is in place.  To access the resources, please click on the link:     https://www.cbe.ab.ca/programs/curriculum/learning-at-home/Pages/k-6.aspx   We will be in contact with everyone again after spring break to provide further updates, but until then here are a few picture book ideas that might inspire you to move or create music: From Head to Toe by Eric Carle Silly Sally by Audrey Wood Oh! by Kevin Henkes Move! by Steve Jenkins
